Week of April 22: Arroz con Pollo and 68 Meals
Good week. The shelter had chicken donated from a grocery store — enough for a full pot of arroz con pollo for 40 people with some to spare. We stretched it with an extra bag of rice and a bigger pot of beans than usual.
Twelve people came to eat outside. A few I recognized from previous weeks. One man I hadn’t seen before asked if there was enough. There was.
The 18 lunch boxes went out the next morning with the residents heading to work. Leftover rice and beans, a tortilla, wrapped and bagged. Simple. It works.
Out of pocket this week was $47 — a bag of rice, dried chiles, jamaica flowers for the agua fresca, and a few limes. The chicken and tortillas were donated.
The team this week was Michael Jarrett, Jon, my mom Debbie, and me. Four people, three hours, 68 meals. That math never stops feeling good.
